Bar charts display values by the height of the bars making them easy and quick to read.

They can be used to show values in different categories where there is no inherent relationship between the categories is assumed.

However, they are hard to read and can introduce biases when differences are too small (see Weber-Fechner law). Also when the data points are related temporally or otherwise, other charts (e.g., area or line charts are a better choice. Finally, if the relative size of the values to the whole are to be shown, a pie chart may be more intuitive.
